XABIERO JUAN AYUSO PROCLAIMED NATIONAL CHAMPION
Ayuso is on a bit of a winning streak, having won 13 of the 16 races during 2020 and the promising cyclist has been signed by UAE-Team Emirates.
17-year-old cyclist Juan Ayuso has been proclaimed champion of Spain at junior level after triumphing in the road race and time trial categories at the Spanish National Championships over the weekend.
On Friday 4th September, Ayuso finished top of the pile in the National Championships Time Trial in Llucmajor on the island of Mallorca, finishing the 21,6 kilometre course in 26m 11s, some 28 secs ahead of Igor Arrieta and almost a minute in front of José Luis Medina.
On Sunday 6th September, the young Xabiero covered the 134km course of the National Championships Road Race in 3h 9m 20s, ahead of Balearic rider Francesc Bennassar in runner-up position and the Cantabrian Sergio Gutierrez in third.
On his victory, Ayuso said: “It was a very complicated race. We knew that they were going to run against us and they made things very difficult. I have to thank the whole team because they have done a great job of controlling at all times. They have worked themselves to the bone for me to reach the last climb all grouped together. I tried to go alone but couldn’t and so I saved myself at the end for the sprint where I was able to prevail at the end.”
Ayuso is on a bit of a winning streak, having won 13 of the 16 races during 2020 and the promising cyclist has been signed by UAE-Team Emirates to compete for the team from 2022.
