The women’s team Deportivo Alavés Gloriosas, in which Xabiera Gema Soliveres plays, has won promotion to the Iberdrola Primera División after beating Atlético de Madrid ‘B’ at the Centro Deportivo Wanda in Madrid. Gema, 20, whose brother plays for CD Jávea, joined the ‘Gloriosas’ in 2000 after four seasons with Valencia CF ‘B’.
The ‘Gloriosas’ had to win the game to top the Promotion North playoff table ahead of Osasuna, who were just one point behind. They went ahead in the 12th minute through a penalty scored by Miriam and doubled the advantage in the 67th minute through a powerful half-volley from the edge of the area by Miriam. A few minutes later Chamorro had a golden opportunity to put the game beyond doubt after breaking clear and facing the keeper in a one-on-one situation but the custodian did well to charge out and block the shot.
At the final whistle, Gema was able to celebrate with her family and friends who travelled to Madrid to see her fulfill her dream of playing at the highest level in women’s football in Spain.
