Xàbia is slowly trying to regain a sense of normality. This week, the Brotherhood of Jesús Nazareno and the town council has published a simple but symbolic programme of events to honour the treasured image, a schedule similar to that developed for the celebrations which celebrated the Virgin de Loreto in the port last September.

The celebrations which honour Jesús Nazareno would normally be kicking off this coming weekend, a programme that would feature bull-running, concerts, dancing, the official flower crosses, the return of the image to the blue-domed chapel of Calvario, concluding with a spectacular firework display.

However, like last year, the ongoing pandemic has forced the Brotherhood to amend its plans. At least this year, there will be something for the devoted, a simple programme that combines the religious aspect of the fiesta with some traditional acts such as the flower offering, all within the required health protocol regime to halt the spread of the virus.

But also this year, the Brotherhood wants to recreate the beautiful and spontaneous demonstration of devotion shown by many residents during last year’s confinement and encourage once again the display of crosses on balconies and terraces as well as in gardens and homes, for this is a tradition that is heavily ingrained in the history of Xàbia.

As always, all scheduled events will be held with the required health protocols in place; face masks must be worn and hand disinfectant used when entering the church. The flower offering will be staggered to reduce the risk of crowding and social distancing must be maintained to prevent the risk of infection.
