The Department of Social Services in Xàbia has launched SASEM, a new care and follow-up service for mental illness aimed at people between 18 and 65 years of age with serious mental health problems, which has been financed through funding provided by the regional government.

The councillor responsible for Social Services, Rita Berruti, explained that the main objective of this initiative is to accompany people with serious mental illness (such as schizophrenia, bipolarity or personality disorder) in achieving an integrated life in the community, facilitating staying in their social environment.

To this end, psychological and social intervention will be carried out, monitoring and support will be provided in carrying out basic activities of daily life and support will be provided for their social and labor insertion. Group activities and workshops will also be carried out, as well as care and support for families and caregivers.

SASEM begins to roll in coordination with the other community support service for people with serious mental illnesses, such as the TAPIS workshops. The team is made up of a psychologist and a social worker who can be accessed through referral from primary care Social Services or through the municipality’s Mental Health department.
