This Saturday 11th December, Plaça Celestino Pons in the heart of the historic centre of Xàbia will be hosting a new edition of the local “Biblioteca Viviente” to celebrate the week of cultural diversity. It is an initiative, through which foreign residents share their experiences to show how Xàbia has immense wealth, thanks to the great cultural diversity it hosts.

For this, Xàbia Council has programmed a children’s storyteller that will narrate the history of Los Pueblos. The little ones will be able to know the essence of different peoples, their traditions and listen to stories and legends from different parts of the world. This activity is free and will start at 11.00am.

At 11:30 am, the “human library” will start, an initiative which the council has titled “It is also Xàbia“. This year, it will star migrants with the participation of foreigners who today reside in Xàbia and residents who were born here, but emigrated to other countries. The characteristic that unites them goes beyond their status as a migrant and is that they all carry out basic and low-value jobs today such as caring for the elderly, domestic cleaning, food production or distribution, etc., activities that have been revealed as fundamental during the pandemic and essential for day-to-day life.

The mechanics of this particular experiential library is simple: each attendee will receive a card and a small encyclopedia with the people they can meet. By participating with people born in Xàbia and others who are not, but who reside here, different perspectives and realities can be discovered within the same task or workplace. Not surprisingly, the arrival of people from outside the municipality has made it possible for trades and customs typical of the population to have continuity here.

The Biblioteca Viviente is organized by the foreigners assistance office (PANGEA) at the Department of Social Services. For more information about this and other intercultural projects, you can go online here.
