Xàbia receives 30,000 m³ of desalinated water in pioneering water sustainability initiative
The measure, promoted by ACCIONA, will contribute to the protection of the local aquifer and reinforces the municipality’s commitment to sustainability and the responsible management of natural resources.

Xàbia Council will receive a total of 30,000 cubic meters of desalinated water thanks to an environmental offset initiative promoted by ACCIONA. This contribution, which will be made over the next 12 months, aims to offset the water consumption generated during the 2024 ACCIONA Open de España, making this sporting tournament the first to achieve a positive water and carbon footprint.
The water will be delivered from the desalination plant the company operates in the municipality itself, located in the Júcar Basin, one of the most water-stressed areas in the country. Thanks to this initiative, the extraction of water from local aquifers will be avoided, thus reinforcing municipal policies for the preservation of natural resources and efficient water management.
Mayor Rosa Cardona praised this public-private collaboration: “This initiative allows us to make progress in protecting one of our most valuable assets: water. We continue working to ensure responsible and sustainable management of our natural resources, and this agreement with ACCIONA is a step in the right direction”.
The councillor responsible for Water Resources, José Marcos Pons (Vox), emphasized the positive impact of this measure on the balance of the local aquifer: “Thanks to this contribution of desalinated water, we will be able to significantly reduce well extraction and give our aquifer a break. This action fits with our roadmap for water management and highlights Xàbia’s role as a leader in this area“.
This initiative joins other measures implemented in recent years by the Xàbia Council to improve water efficiency and protect the municipality’s natural environment.
