This Christmas, the Departments of Education and Equality have joined together to launch an awareness campaign entitled “Olvídate de las Etiqutas” (English: “Forget the Labels) through which they want toencourage children and their families in the education of the little ones without sexist stereotypes.
The councilor in charge, Montse Villaverde, explained that by taking advantage of the fact that Christmas is a time for gifts, this campaign emphasizes the importance of buying non-sexist or non-violent toys, thus promoting free play and not conditioned by clichés or gender roles.
In addition to posters and advertising aimed at the entire population, the message will be taken directly to the boys and girls through two materials: a postcard that can be used to write the letter to the Three Kings or Santa Claus and a cut-out to play with. They will be distributed in schools this week.
Villaverde has stressed that equality education is a path that must begin from early childhood and that, at this stage, toys and games are an important tool for the self-perception of minors. “With the choice of toys, you are also educating yourself,” she said, adding that she hopes that this campaign will at least serve to reflect on a decision before buying a gift and that it promotes equality in a positive, constructive and creative way.
