Xàbia presents an extensive programme to commemorate March 8

The council has highlighted the importance of continuing to promote initiatives that foster equality and make the role of women visible in all areas of society.

Xàbia Council has presented the extensive programme that has been prepared to commemorate March 8, International Women’s Day, one that is packed with activities that demonstrates the town hall’s firm commitment to promoting gender equality in the municipality.

The presentation was attended by the mayor Rosa Cardona, the councillor responsible for Equality, Raquel Violero (PP), the councillor responsible for Culture, Mavi Pérez (CpJ), and the councillor responsible for Sports, Toni Molina (PP). During the act, they highlighted the importance of continuing to promote initiatives that foster equality and make the role of women visible in all areas of society.

Among the planned activities are:

On Sunday 16th February at 10.00am, the Cursa de la Dona, the non-competitive women’s race, will start from the athletics track of CEIP Graüll, organized, as every year, in collaboration with the Club Esportiu Llebeig.

During the month of February, artistic and musical sessions will be held with the 4th year ESO students, where they will participate in the creation and recording of two video clips giving image to the songs recorded in the workshop of the previous year with the aim of promoting gender equality. These pieces will be presented on Thursday 13th March at 8.00pm at the Casa de la Cultura in Plaça del Baix.

On Wednesday 19th February, from 6.00pm to 8.00pm, the illustration workshop ‘Estereotipos Femeninos: La Mujer Bruja’ will take place, led by Helga Ambak. The illustrator will teach us her techniques and dismantle the gender stereotypes associated with women based on the social construct of the “witch woman”. The workshop is open to all and no prior knowledge of illustration is required. It will be held at the Duanes Library in Avenida del Botanic Cabanilles. Registration can be made until February 17th via the email: helga.ambak@gmail.com. The results of this workshop will be presented at the institutional event on Friday 7th March and will remain on display at the Historic Centre Library in Carrer Mayor until Saturday 15th March.

On Thursday 6th March at 8.00pm, the event will take place at the Xàbia Conservatory, where a concert dedicated to compositions by women entitled ‘Las Mujeres en la Música‘, celebrating its 6th edition, will take place.

The Institutional Act will take place on Friday 7th March at 12.00 pm in the Plaza de la Iglesia. Before this, at 10.30am, the women of the European Union of Women Marina Alta will celebrate the ‘Café Intercultural de Mujeres’ in the Historic Centre Library in Carrer Mayor. On Saturday 8th March, two theatrical performances will take place. At 11.30am, we will enjoy the children’s puppet theatre show ‘La Princesa o No’ by Proyecto Caravana on Paseo Tenista David Ferrer in the area of ​​the pergolas of the southern car-park of the Playa del Arenal. And at 8.00 pm ,in the Casa de Cultura, the play ‘Y Sin Embargo, Me Quiero’ will be performed by Imma Sancho.

On Tuesday 11th March at 7.00pm, EPA students will enjoy the monologue ‘Made in Patriarcado’ by Marisela Romero.

On Saturday 15th March at 8pm in the Casa de la Cultura, there will be Pepa Cases’ theatre and dance performance of ‘Bésame 2.0’ whilst on the same day, the exhibition ‘Mis Demonios’ by Xusa Bou will be inaugurated at the Soler Blasco Museum. This exhibition will be on display until April 13th.

The second week of April will see the storytelling ‘Érase una vez un cuento al revés’ for 3rd grade primary school students, dismantling myths and gender stereotypes that are learned through children’s narrative stories.

And last but not least, on Thursday 10th April at 6.00pm, the writer and teacher Anna Freixas will offer a lecture-colloquium where she will reflect on ageism from a gender perspective. An event in which she will also present her book ‘Yo Vieja’ at the Centro Social.

In addition, between February and April the well-known Thursday Comedy Nights season will be held, with different artists who will deal with the subject from different perspectives.

  • Thursday 20th March, 8.00pm at Duanes Library: Bianca Kovacs ‘Una Rumana Muy Legal’.
  • Thursday 22nd May, 8.00pm Multipurpose Room Portal del Clot: Rubén Aparisi and María Zamora.

In addition, the Department of Sports has scheduled various activities focused on women and sport. These include the Cursa de la Dona on Sunday 16th February, Capoeira i altres expressions culturals afrobrasileres and Dona i bàdminton on Saturday 8th March, the 4th Regata de la Dona on Sunday 9th March, the Self-Defense Workshop for Women and Boys on Saturday 15th March and the round table workshop “La Dona i l’Esport” on Thursday 20th March.

Although this programme is centred around a specific date, March 8, the town hall explained that the fight for gender equality is a task that is carried out throughout the year and that it is the responsibility of all people to help achieve real equality.
