XÀBIA PREPARES TO FACE POTENTIAL WATER SHORTAGES

A new campaign will encourage responsible consumption of water in the municipality.

In the wake of the concerning news that the Valencian region is facing an “exceptional drought situation” due to the continued absence of any meaningful rainfall over the past few months, the local council in Xàbia has been “doing its homework” with regards to water supply and preparing for the potential difficulties presented by a busy summer season by launching a new campaign to encourage the water savings.

The latest meeting of the Xàbia Water Observatory – L’Observatori de l’Aigüa de Xàbia – addressed the current water supply situation in the municipality with mayor Rosa Cardona assuring its residents that the local council has been “doing its homework in terms of water resources”, adding that “we must all continue to be responsible in the consumption of water”.

To support that call, José Luis Henarejos, the manager of the municipal water company AMJASA, revealed that water consumption in Xàbia has “skyrocketed” in the first three months of 2024 compared to previous years due to the significant lack of rainfall. However, he added that the fresh water wells were at their normal levels and that there was a balance between these sources and the production of water by the desalination plant.

He also confirmed that a campaign entitled “Cada gota cuenta, os necesitamos” – “Every drop counts, we need you” – is being launched to highlight the importance of continuing to save water with the first phase being aimed at tourist accommodation and schools.

The mayor also assured that work would continue to improve the entire water supply network and that the next meeting of the observatory would not only provide an update but also address the issue of sanitation and the reuse of purified water.
