The Muixeranga de la Marina Alta and the Fishermen’s Guild, in collaboration with the Department of Culture in Xàbia, have organized a day of popular culture at the port zone of the town on Sunday 30th March at 12.30pm in which the group will debut its new, unique, four-story human tower which will bear an iconic name – “El Portitxol”.

The Muixeranga is a performance featuring ancient street dances and human pyramids, known as “castells”, which are similar to the traditions of Catalonia but differ in the sense that the performance is accompanied by traditional dancing and features not only great height but the development of the human tower that creates a particular scene.

The councillor responsible for Culture, Mavi Pérez, Amadeu Ros representing the Fishermen’s Guild, and Pepe Signes, vice president of the Muixeranga de la Marina Alta, presented the poster for the event that will feature a major performance and will debut a new, unique, four-story tower bearing the town’s iconic name “El Portitxol” which they plan to display in all the towns they visit in the future, as they hope other muixeranga groups will do.

The performance will take place on the harbour, where the “baret dels bous” is normally set up, and will be accompanied by the dulzainas and tabals (traditional flutes and drums) of the Colla el Portitxol, making the event a unique moment in the cultural calendar of Xàbia
