This Sunday 5th March at 12.30pm, Xàbia Council celebrates an act of recognition of Ramona Fernández de Palencia in which a plaque will be placed in a public space in the heart of the historic centre that has been dedicated to her, as endorsed unanimously during the plenary session in October 2021.
This is the small square located between the Mercado Municipal – the “indoor market” – and San Bartolomé church, next to Plaza Celestino Pons, which has been renovated for the occasion. The council has re-painting the space and replaced the playground surface and the ornamental plants.
Better known in Xàbia as “Doña Ramona”, Fernández de Palencia is remembered for her altruistic character and social activism, devoting her time and ability to help to improve the lives of those who needed it most, values that led her to be distinguished in 2011 with the 9 d’Octubre award for solidarity. She passed away in March 2020 at the age of 92.
A tireless fighter, her effort was essential to achieve the opening of the Xàbia Day Centre. She was also a great collaborator of the parishes, always faithful to her moral and religious convictions whilst she fostered education and formation in values among young people. Her extroverted character led her to form part of the first associations of school parents’ association as well as to promote different associations, among which the Jesús de Nazareno Women’s Brotherhood.
