November 25th marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a date established by the United Nations in 1991 to commemorate the murder of the Mirabal sisters on November 25, 1960 in the Dominican Republic. This act of resistance against the Trujillo dictatorship symbolizes the fight against sexist violence, which still today requires the firm commitment of the entire society.

For this purpose, Xàbia Council is joining the commemoration once again with a series of activities focused on raising awareness, prevention and education about this problem.

From 18th to 29th November, the UNED in Dénia will be offering co-education workshops for primary school students from schools in Xàbia and workshops on the myth of romantic love for secondary school students from the municipality’s institutes.

On November 18th and 19th, gender violence prevention workshops will be held for CREAMA and Adult Education Centre students with the aim of addressing this problem from an educational and participatory perspective.

Between November 19th and 21st, the puppet show “La Huella de mi Zapato” will be performed for the students of the schools , a visual proposal that reflects on gender stereotypes and their impact on the construction of identity.

On November 24th, at 11 am, the Plaza de la Constitución will be the scene of the street show Ohlimpiadas, a work aimed at all audiences. This show is about two cleaners who, bored with their daily routine, enter a dream world where their work day is broadcast as if it were an Olympic competition. Sporting gestures, dance, acrobatic moves and humour support this world of nonsense, which shows one of the most established forms of sexist violence in our society, the lack of recognition of domestic and care work.

On Monday 25th November, coinciding with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the institutional event will take place at 12:00 noon in the Plaza de la Iglesia, with the reading of the manifesto and the performance “El placer es Nuestra Revolución”, a claim for the right to well-being and autonomy of women

In addition, on the same day the play will be performed for secondary school students Crush, pum, zas, nyam, guau’ which addresses youth relationships and the experience of sexuality with a reflective and close vision

Finally, on November 29th, at 10:00 am, the Jávea Golf Club will host the talk ‘Cómo actuar ante la violencia de género. Recursos comarcales y municipales’, organized by the European Union of Women with the collaboration of the Guardia Civil and the Policía Local de Xàbia.

With this programme, Xàbia will be reaffirming its commitment to the fight against gender-based violence and invites citizens to join these activities that seek to raise awareness and move towards a more equitable society free of violence.
