Xábia joins surveillance of Cap de Sant Antoni Marine Reserve
Access to the marine reserve is strictly controlled, including fishing and sports diving without a licence.
Xàbia Council is to join the control and surveillance agreement of the Cap de Sant Antoni Marina Reserve, a protected area which runs around the nose of the headland of Sant Antoni between Xàbia and Dénia.
The agreement was created by the local council in Dénia and the regional government’s Ministry of Environment, Water, Infrastructure and Territory a few years ago and now Xàbia has joined the control and surveillance of the marine reserve after a meeting hosted by the town and attended by mayor Rosa Cardona, the councillors responsible for the Environment, Juanlu Cardona (PP), and of Heritage, Enrique Escrivà (PP), the general director of the Ministry of Natural Environment and Animals, Raúl Mérida, the director of the Parque Natural del Montgó, José Antonio Hernéndez and members of the natural park team.
Councillor Cardona explained that the incorporation of Xàbia into the agreement will allow for the expansion of surveillance and control of the marine reserve where human access is restricted, including the anchoring of boats, recreational fishing and sports diving without the appropriate licence.
Other issues discussed during the meeting included the proposed visitor centre of the headland as well as proposals and investments to improve the natural park, including accessibility.
After the meeting, the group visited the Les Planes area, the Cap de Sant Antoni viewpoint, the Les Planes Recreational Area and other points around the park that lie within the borders of the municipality of Xàbia.
