Xàbia will be joining Dénia and Jesús Pobre in hosting the 12th edition of the Riurau Film Festival between August 19th and September 5th, the Marina Alta short film festival organised by Asociación Escola de Cinema Riurau in collaboration with the town halls of the three municipalities.
The festival presentation was held in Xàbia with mayoress Rosa Cardona joined by the mayor of Jesús Pobre, Josep Fornés, the councillor for Culture in Xàbia, Mavi Pérez, and her counterpart from Dénia, Raúl García de la Reina, and the festival organiser’s representatves Ana Perles and Isabel Bilbao.
Ana Perles explained that the Ruirau Film Festival was celebrating its 12th edition and called for greater support from institutions and private companies since the festival is “committed to culture and the film industry of the Marina Alta”. She added that the association has acted as a contact for film companies working in the region. She stressed that the festival was “very different” from other events since the screenings are outdoors in the riuraus.
Isabel Bilbao added that 781 short films of all genres were presented and a total of 39 have been selected to be screened at the Riurau d’Arnauda (Xàbia), the Gran Riurau de Benissadeví (Jesús Pobre) and the Parque de Torrecremada in Denia.
She explained that all the screenings have been concentrated over two weekends and that, unlike previous editions, the genres have been distributed amongst the three venues, although the common thread will be fiction. She added that 16 of the screenings are directed specifically at women.
The Ruirau Film Festival has a prize fund of 3,800 euros with 700 euros for the best short film and the best director. These will be selected by a jury made up of José María Fraguas de Pablo (editor, director, director, screenwriter and writer), Alberto Úbeda Portugués (journalist, writer, screenwriter, musical composer and member of the Spanish Film Academy), Ignacio Estrada (operator of the Spanish Film Library, film and digital media supervisor for Cine Doré; higher degree in Image and Sound , and director, editor and writer for TV), Carlos Miralles (producer, screenwriter and member of the Spanish Film Academy), Vicent Buigues (specialists of Xàbia Town Hall and member of the Cine Club El Seté Segell), Christinne Williems (secretary of the Associació Escola de Cinema Riurau and filmmaker) with Jocelyn Prado acting as secretary of the jury without vote.
