The official kickoff of the 23rd edition of the hugely-popular Xàbia Folk music festival will take place on Friday 25th April at 7.30pm at the Casa de la Cultura in Plaça del Baix in the heart of the historic centre with a concert-presentation by the Greco-Valencian group Ataxía. As has been the custom for several editions, this opening concert allows the Department of Culture and the festival organisers to explain to attendees the criteria and reasons for the forthcoming programme as well as its most interesting aspects.

This year’s festival line-up seeks “a very prominent presence of proposals created and led by women.” This is a characteristic that has been seen in many previous editions but now, more than two decades after the first festival, “it is undeniable that women artists have earned the place they deserve in the current folk scene and this is demonstrated in this year’s lineup.”

A new feature this year is the organisation of two concerts on the opening day: one at the Casa de Cultura (Ataxia, 7.30pm) and another in the marquee on Plaza de la Constitución (Alidé Sans, 10.30pm). Ataxía has managed to endure in the difficult world of Valencian music, performing songs from Greece and Asia Minor, and even performing concerts outside of Spain, guided by their passion for the style of music they practice. Authenticity above all else. Alidé Sans is one of the young and recent revelations in Occitan music. She champions Occitan music and culture from the Vall de Arán with a contemporary approach that has received the support of young fans, who have understood the future potential of her show “Arraïtz”.

After the festivities honouring Jesús Nazareno, the momentum will be rekindled with a performance for school audiences scheduled again this year at the Riurau de Arnauda (Friday 9th May 9 at 12 pm). Titiriteros de Binéfar are one of the longest-running entertainment groups in Spain with an extraordinary lineup of shows. This isn’t their first time in Xàbia, but this time they’re bringing “Jauja!”, a party filled with classic folk songs.

On Friday 9th May at 10.30pm, in the marquee on the Plaza de la Constitución, Carola Ortiz will perform with a production that has garnered national and international critical acclaim. Her artistic offering, “Cantareras”, is a tribute to the folklore of Iberian women, revisited in a contemporary way with elements of folk, jazz, medieval music, and electronic music.

On Saturday 10th May, 10.30pm, Klezmerama will take to the main stage in Plaza de la Constitución. They are also a revelation due to their recent acclaim, and surely for those to come, judging by the optimistic message of their concert title, “Mazeltov!” (good luck, in Hebrew). Led by the electric violin of Heidi Erbrich, the band fuses rock, rap, rumba, reggae, funk, and tango rhythms, transporting the audience to a world where tradition and innovation intertwine in a fascinating way.

The traditional “acoustic” concert at the Santa Llúcia Hermitage on Sunday 11th May at 12 noon will feature a newly formed three-woman group, Silvestres. They masterfully work the polyphony of their voices, inspired by tradition, yet fully recreated with a critical, feminist, and inclusive perspective, which connects their music to the legendary past with the present.
