Xàbia Council approves credit modification of almost 14 million euros

The modification will fund an action plan for public roads, infrastructure, security and surveillance, amongst others.

The plenary session of the local council in Xàbia which took place last Thursday approved a credit modification of some 13,885,000 euros that will be used to fund various projects necessary to improve the quality of life and safety of residents in Xàbia. The modification was approved with the support of the local government body PP-CPJ-Vox; councillors from the PSPV and Compromís abstained.

A large wedge of the funding will be used to finance investment in citizen security and civil protection, including video surveillance and fire prevention infrastructure such as interconnected water cannons. The rest will be used to meet the costs of pending projects and local council expenses.

One of the main projects will be the immediate work on the Primer Muntanyar between the port and the Arenal zone which will install a protection system between pedestrians and vehicles. There is also funding for a road resurfacing campaign, the continuation of the drainage projects throughout the municipality, and for comprehensive action to address green areas, gardens and public roads.

In addition, the credit modification will allow funding to be made for the Fire Service, Residuos de la Marina Alta, a entity that manages urban solid waste generated by the municipalities of the Marina Alta, the online public university UNED, and the Casa del Mediterráneo which promotes understanding between Spain and other Mediterranean countries.

Xàbia Mayoress Rosa Cardona explained that her priority is to continue to improve the quality of services, mainly cleaning and gardening, children’s infrastructure and public safety in the municipality.

The PSPV was critical of the modification which also includes funding for day-to-day tenders such as that for the bidding for a media agency and sports department management which they equated to be worth some 90,000 euros. The councillor responsible for Contracting, Teresa Legay (PP), explained that the amount was actually closer to 60,000 euros and corresponded to the new advertising contract that was being prepared. She admitted that the funding has increase but said that it was because agency expenses had been included which were not done so in previous contracts.

The socialists also argued the fact that the suspension of the basura tax could have been maintained given a surplus of 5 million euros in the bank and a remaining balance of almost 50 million euros.
