Xàbia closed 2022 with 1,221 unemployed, a slight increase of 30 people compared to the month of November. This figure is determined by the State Public Employment Service which only counts registered people so the actual number of unemployed in the municipality could be higher.

Despite the fact that the Christmas season always tends to see a drop in unemployment, there always seems to be an irregular trend in Xàbia, since we are in the middle of the low season and the fact that the Christmas season is a time for shopping and spending in the outlying commercial centres so that local shopping tends to be lower and consequently so is the chance for employment.

That said, the figure is lower that the same period in 2021 (1,488) although the circumstances were very different with the health restrictions still in place and the start of a new wave of infections hitting Xàbia hardest during the pandemic.

During the December 2022, women were once again the group most affected by unemployment with 714 seeking a job, 22 more than in November, whilst there were 507 men out of work, 8 more than the previous work.

In both cases, the most affected age group was – once again – those aged 45 and over (413 women and 311 men) whilst those in the 25-44 age group registered 270 women and 164 men seeking a job. Those under the age of 25 saw 31 women and 32 men looking for work.

By sectors, Services saw the most number of unemployed (956, 26 more than November) whilst Construction remained the same as the previous month (141). In both Industry and Agriculture & Fishing, both increased by one, to 48 and 12 respectively. Finally, 64 people registered as unemployed for the first time.

With regards to contracts, there was a decrease during December, from 382 the previous month to 306. Despite the fact that the hiring process has changed due to the national labour reforms that came into force a year ago), the number of contracts issued in Xàbia has been gradually dropping since September.

Of the 306 contracts signed during December, 191 were permanent (110 men and 81 women), 93 were temporary (52 women and 41 men), and 22 changed from temporary to permanent (14 men and 8 women).
