Xàbia celebrates Santa Lucía in an adapted way
The ongoing health crisis forces the celebration of mass in honour of the saints to be held in the church of San Bartolome.

In a simple way, but with the same enthusiasm as always, Xàbia has celebrated the festivities of Santa Lucía and Santa Bárbara.
During the evening of Sunday 12th December, many neighbors were surprised to hear the thunder of rockets and music through the streets of the historic centre of town. Despite the pandemic situation, the Santa Lucía festival commission celebrated the traditional Crida de la Festa, a parade with more than half a century of history that once served to announce the arrival of the celebration in honour of the two saints of the chapel which is located on the small hill above the town. It was a journey around town that included the customary floral offering in the niche in Calle Santa Llúcia.
Today Monday 13th December – the feast day of the patron saint of the sight – the celebrations has continued, albeit in an adapted way. At 10.30am, the solemn mass was celebrated in the church of San Bartolomé (instead of the chapel itself) due to its larger capacity and compliance with the required basic sanitary measures. The altar has been presided over by the two small images that usually dwell in the chapel.
After the mass, the two images were accompanied in pilgrimage by residents until they return to their chapel, a way of fulfilling the obligatory local tradition of ascending to the top to pay devotion to Saint Lucia.
