Xàbia approves suspension of tourist accommodation licences for six months
The measure will allow a study to be carried out to determine the effect of tourist accommodation on the housing market in the town.
Xàbia Council has approved measures to regulate the growing demand for tourist accommodation in an attempt to balance economic activity with the quality of life of its residents.
The latest plenary session unanimously approved a temporary suspension of the granting of new licences for tourist accommodation in the municipality for a period of six months. This measure will allow a detailed study to be carried out on the impact and regulation of this type of accommodation.
The decision arises from the need to analyse in depth the effects of tourist accommodation on the housing market, neighbourly coexistence, natural resources and overcrowding during the summer months, with the aim of finding a balance between economic benefits and social and environmental challenges. Consequently, the local government has commissioned the preparation of a study that will determine the strategies to be adopted for the correct regulation of these homes.
During this period, all new requests for urban compatibility reports which will be necessary to obtain tourist accommodation licenses will be suspended while the current situation is analyzed and measures are designed to allow for more appropriate and sustainable management of tourism in Xàbia.
It should be noted that a few weeks ago the government team organized a sectoral working table on tourist accommodation which was attended by representatives of all political parties and the sectors involved to discuss the issue and address all the details of the measure that the plenary session has taken today.
