There has been some flooding in the Barranqueres area and the Gorgos river is carrying large amounts of sediment into the sea.

The rainfall arrived in Xàbia overnight and this morning, dropping a significant amount of water in the area of Les Valls, where up to 202 litres per square metre have been recorded, causing the Barranqueres ravine to overflow, although without any major damage or affecting urban areas. Some roads in the valley have been closed due to flooding as well as the fords which cross the Gorgos river.

Up to 5.00pm, the highest precipitation, measured in litres per square metre, has been recorded in the following by the following weather stations:

  • 202.4 Les Valls
  • 199.4 Partida Julians
  • 179.8 ASEVI
  • 95.6 Montgó-Toscamar
  • 82.3 Lluca-Rafalet
  • 76.8 Club de Golf
  • 66.5 Lluca-Coster d’En Sala
  • 34.8 Platja de l’Arenal (Restaurante La Fontana)
  • 21.6 Port (Avenida de Lepanto)
  • 20.8 Xàbia Històrica (Plaza de la Marina Alta – Correos)

The Gorgos river has also filled with water, not only from the rainfall in the Xàbia area but also from precipitation falling in further inland which, together with the flooding of the ravine of Les Barranqueres, has channeled plenty of water through the municipality to the sea where the waters around the mouth of the river have a brownish colour due to the large amount of sediment by the floodwater.

The current forecast suggests that the heavy rain is likely to return overnight and into tomorrow with AEMET maintaining a yellow risk alert throughout tomorrow, although models seem to suggest that the heaviest of the rain is probably going to affect coastal areas further to the north.
