VIRUS UPDATE: 1 new positive detected in Xàbia; municipality suffers a single death

The infection appears to be spreading again in 13 of 19 autonomous communities in Spain as experts warn of the potential for a ‘fourth wave’, albeit one that is less serious.

This is the latest information on the status of the health situation in Xàbia, the Marina Alta, the Comunidad Valenciana and across Spain.

Xàbia

Xàbia has seen 1 new positive case detected by PCR test reported since the last update on Friday 19th, taking the total to 1,424 positive cases detected in Xàbia since the pandemic began. There has been death since the last update, the total ticking up to 12.

Marina Alta

The Dénia Health Authority, which covers the Marina Alta region, has recorded new infections detected by PCR test since the last update, bringing the total to 9,684 positive cases since the crisis began. The Marina Alta currently has one of the lowest rates in the Comunidad Valenciana.

The new infections have been reported in the following municipalities:

  • Dénia – 4
  • Calp – 3
  • Xàbia – 1
  • Xàlo – 1

There has been 4 new deaths since the last update (one each in Dénia, Pedreguer, Pego and Xàbia) and the total is now 191 since the crisis began.

Comunidad Valenciana

As of 22/03/2021, 155 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed through PCR or antigen tests since the last update:

  • Provincia de Castellón: 27 (+23 on previous update)
  • Provincia de València: 98 (+60)
  • Provincia de Alicante: 30 (+18)

In total, 384,243 positive cases have been recorded in the Comunidad Valenciana. There is currently 2 unassigned cases.

Outbreaks

There have been a total of new outbreaks of the disease across the Comunidad Valenciana:

  • Provincia de Castellón: 3
  • Provincia de Alicante: 1 (Elda)

The origins of these new outbreaks can be assigned as follows:

  • 50% Education

Active Cases

The data shows that there are currently 3,542 active cases of COVID-19 in the Comunidad Valenciana, with represents 0.90% of the total number of positives cases recorded.

Deaths

There have been 15 deaths from COVID-19, bringing the total for the Comunidad Valenciana to 7,066 people.

  • Provincia de Castellón: 776 (+1 since the last update)
  • Provincia de València: 3,617 (+3)
  • Provincia de Alicante: 2,671 (+11)

Hospitalization

There are 478 people currently in hospitals across the Comunidad Valenciana who are being treated for the COVID-19 infection (changes since last update):

  • Provincia de Castellón: 25 (-6) with 3 patients in ICU (-3)
  • Provincia de València: 248 (+14) with 75 patients in ICU (-2)
  • Provincia de Alicante: 205 (-30) with 60 patients in ICU (-2)

Recoveries

746 new recoveries from COVID-19 have been registered; in total, 385,099 people in the Comunidad Valenciana have overcome the disease since the pandemic began.

Vaccination

562,350 doses of the vaccination have been administered throughout the Comunidad Valenciana. A total of 198,914 people have completed the vaccination programme in our region.

As of 22/03/2021, Spain has recorded a total of 3,288,803 cases of COVID-19 infection. The 14-day IA rate1 is 128.71; the rate has reached a plateau nationally. The positivity rate2 rise slightly to 5.53%.

There are 8,010 people currently being treated for COVID-19 in hospital, of which 1,672 are in ICU wards. As of 22/03/2021, 6.43% of general wards and 19.54% of ICU beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients.

As of 22/03/2021, 73,543 people have lost their lives to COVID-19.

As of 22/03/2021, 6,321,908 doses of the vaccination have been administered throughout the country – 5,003,737 Pfizer/BioNtech, 328,626 Modena, and 989,545 AstraZeneca/Oxford – representing 82.3% of all vaccines delivered to Spain. A total of 2,110,868 people have completed the two-dose vaccination course with the three vaccines, representing 33.4% of vaccines already administered.

Data Explanation

1 The IA rate is the number of new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 inhabitants over the past 14 days. It is considered the most accurate measure of the spread of the virus. A rate above 250 indicates an ‘Extreme Risk’ that the infection is spreading. The aim of the Spanish government is to lower this rate to 25.

2 The positivity rate refers to the percentage of all COVID-19 tests carried out which have come back positive. A high figure means that it doesn’t take many tests to come across a positive result.
