Valencia highlights public optimism in the face of the pandemic
The results were obtained through face-to-face surveys carried out with more than 4,000 Valencian men and women during June and July 2021
Tuesday 8th November 2021 – PRESS RELEASE with Mike Smith
The results of the 2021 Barometer of the Generalitat Valenciana have reflected public optimism in the region in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and a positive assessment of the Valencian government’s management as well as the request for action, coordination and consensus to the authorities to achieve the economic and social recovery of the Comunidad Valenciana.
The General Directorate of Analysis and Public Policies of the Presidency of the Generalitat Valenciana has prepared the 2021 Barometer, a study carried out from the results of face-to-face surveys of more than 4,000 Valencian men and women during June and July of 2021.
The analysis investigated the perception that the population has regarding different aspects related to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the results obtained in the fight against the disease, the efforts of citizens, protection measures or the management of the Generalitat Valenciana.
Likewise, the barometer extensively collected public opinion on public policies in the recovery phase of the Valencian economy. In addition, it includes more general questions such as those relating to opinions on the social and political context and other common ones in the barometers of the Generalitat Valenciana and the national CIS (the Sociological Research Centre).
The general director of Analysis and Public Policies, Ana Berenguer, presented the study last week and explained that the results “draw a scenario of recovery and pride in what has been achieved, despite the crisis generated by the pandemic.”
In this sense, Berenguer indicated that the respondents “generally approve of the management associated with the pandemic, especially the health care received.” In addition, she clarified that the aspects related to the current context of recovery are those that have received a less positive assessment and for this reason she ensured that the Generalitat Valenciana is focused on working to achieve economic recovery and “for us, it is a call for effort, for dialogue and for consensus “.
The director also highlighted that the barometer reflects a rejection of the reduction in spending on health, education and scientific research. And respecting the political polarization, she explained that the results show that citizens consider “that Valencian politics is less polarized than Spanish politics.”
Barometer 2021
The Generalitat Valenciana’s Barometer 2021 highlighted the optimism expressed by citizens regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, 46.5% of the people surveyed say they feel proud of the effort made by Valencian society and of the results obtained in the fight against the disease.
The analysis also included the positive assessment of the Valencian government’s management and in this sense, more than 61% of the population believes that politicians should strive to negotiate and reach agreements.
The survey also highlighted the optimism of Valencians regarding the evolution of the political and economic-social situation in the Comunidad Valenciana. Most of those surveyed understood that the regional government listens to citizens and takes into account their preferences in the design of public policies.
Due to the different sociodemographic, economic and political characteristics of each territory, plural results were obtained, but general coincidences were also observed, which drew an optimistic scenario about the evolution of the economic and social situation of the Comunidad Valenciana as well as favourable results for the intervention of the public powers in order to improve the general welfare. There was also general support for investment in social public policies and others related to the digital or ecological transition.
