Unemployment in Comunidad Valenciana for May drops to lowest level since 2008

The regional secretary for Employment said that the drop confirmed four consecutive months of reduction in unemployment.

The regional secretary for Employment, José Antonio Rovira, has revealed that unemployment in the Comunidad Valenciana during the month of May fell by just over 1% to the lowest level for the month since 2008.

Figures released by Spain’s Ministry of Labour and Social Economy show that unemployment in the Comunidad Valenciana dropped by 3,414 during May, a figure which the regional secretary confirmed “four consecutive months of reduction in unemployment” and reflected signs of economic strength since the data proves that the Valencian region is “the second autonomous region where unemployment has decreased the most this year behind only Andalusia”.

He added that the number of affiliations (the number of people contributing to Social Security) rose to 2,151,346, which he said represented “the highest number of affiliations in the Comunidad Valenciana” for the second consecutive month since records began. The annual increase for the region (2.7%) is higher than the national average (2.4%).

By sectors, unemployment in Construction fell by 1.5%, in Services by 1.2%, in Industry by 1% whilst there was a minimal rise in the group without previous employment (0.14%) and in the Agricultural sector (0.07%).

By age groups, unemployment in the under 25 group fell by 1.6%, in the 25-44 group by 1.9%, and in the over 45 group by 0.6%. By gender, unemployment during May fell for both men (-1.2%) and women (-1.0%). By province, unemployment in Alicante fell by 1.31%, in Castellón by 1.17%, and in Valencia it fell by 0.84%.
