Volunteer groups Jávea, Limpia Te Quiero and Ecologistas en Acción de la Marina Alta admit that they are astonished after finding at least two open sewer manhole covers along the riverbed of the Gorgos just days after the plenary session of Xàbia Council said that all covers would be reviewed.
In a statement sent to XAD, one of the volunteers took a walk along the riverbed and discovered that two of the manhole covers in the stretch between Avenida del Pla and Pont del Llavador are open, one ajar and one without a cover at all and full of wet wipes and various remains.
They said that although the Council had committed to review all the sewage network manholes that are in the river bed, they had either not done it yet or it had only been done in part. They added that the whole of the riverbed along this particular section needs a good deep clean, something that the Council should take more seriously and not leave it to willing volunteers and residents in general.
The Ecologistas en Acción group have contacted the Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar (CHJ) and the SEPRONA, the Guardia Civil specialist unit on water resources (amongst other things), as well as councillor Kika Mata at the town hall.
At the moment, it is not known if the mayor has put together a working group to make a comprehensive study of the municipal sewerage network after the PP presented a motion to do so, a call that was not even debated.
