THE DESCENT OF THE NAZARENE WILL BE THIS SUNDAY 3rd MARCH
The traditional event will see the treasured image carried on the shoulders on the Brotherhood to the heart of the historic centre.
The Women’s Guild of Jesús Nazareno visited the town hall on Monday morning to deliver the programme of liturgical events that will accompany the traditional procession of the descent of the treasured image of Jesús Nazareno to mayor Rosa Cardona and the councillor responsible for Fiestas, Mavi Pérez (PP).
The Guild is responsible for organising these celebrations which begin this Sunday 3rd March – the Third Sunday of Lent – with “La Bajada”, a traditional candle-lit procession in which the people of Xàbia accompany the Brotherhood as they carry the image of Jesús Nazareno from the blue-domed chapel of Calvario down to the fortress-church of San Bartolomé in the heart of the historic centre where it will stay until May 3rd.
The evening will start at 6.30pm when the parish clergy and local council representatives will leave the Plaça de l’Esglèsia to walk up to the blue-domed chapel. At 7.00pm the descent will begin which will result in temporary rolling road closures as the procession moves slowly through the streets of the church.
On Monday 4th March at 12 noon, there will be a solemn mass in honour of the Jesús Nazarene that will be dedicated to the memory of those Guild and Brotherhood members who have passed away. From the same day, there will be the Novena every day at 7.00pm until Tuesday 12th March.
The Women’s Guild of Jesús Nazareno wish to extend an invitation to the people of Xàbia to participate in the procession on Sunday evening as well as the other celebrations.
