Socialists criticize timing of municipal swimming pool debate

Xàbia Mayor Rosa Cardona has responded to the request of the PSPV-PSOE socialist opposition for an extraordinary plenary session to discuss the current situation with the municipal swimming pool, a facility that remains closed after almost a year after being completed and handed over to the local council.

However, the timing of this session – this Thursday 20th February at 10.00am – has been greeted with dismay by the socialists, who have accused the mayor of “fear, cowardice and lack of respect for the residents and the opposition“, suggesting that the decision to hold the debate in the morning is “an unprecedented gesture of willingness to hide the debate“.

The statement issued by the PSPV-PSOE pointed out that in 2021 “Rosa Cardona herself requested an extraordinary plenary session to censure a socialist councillor and the then mayor, José Chulvi, called the plenary session immediately at 8.00pm, as requested by the proposing councillors and to promote maximum participation and transparency“.

In addition, the statement also highlights that an extraordinary plenary session was requested in 2009 at the request of the PSOE and Nueva Jávea, and the mayor Eduardo Monfort called it a few days later in the afternoon, as requested by the applicants.

“This gesture of wanting to hide the plenary session is, therefore, a sign of cowardice and a lack of democratic spirit. That Mrs Cardona does not respect the opposition is something we already knew, but that she does not respect her own people is something new and very sad,” the statement continued.

It accused the PP that, since the request for the extraordinary plenary session, “the PP government has dedicated itself to showing partial and incomplete reports, to giving false information, to spread hoaxes and to accusing municipal technicians, all in order to avoid assuming its responsibility and its inability, 20 months after [being signed over], to open an infrastructure that is ready to open today, if they had the personnel and the clear management model“.
