Xàbia Council and Casa Mediterráneo have announced the second edition of the Xàbia City International Journalism and Sustainable Tourism Award with the aim of promoting awareness of the importance of responsible tourism, respectful of the environment and the cultural identity of the communities of the Mediterranean basin. This award is aimed at journalists who have developed outstanding work in this field and have published it between January 1st and December 31st 2024.
The application period opened on December 10th 2024, and will end on January 17th 2025. The jury’s decision will be announced on February 17th 2025, coinciding with the celebration of World Tourism Resilience Day. The award ceremony will be held in Xàbia on a date yet to be determined.
The €3,500 prize and a commemorative trophy is unique and is open to works of written journalism, audiovisual journalism, data journalism, digital innovation and blogs. In addition, the jury may award a special mention if it deems it appropriate.
In the first edition, the winners were Xavier Aldekoa and Laura Aragó, for their work “El último grito del Mediterráneo” published in La Vanguardia. This article, which was part of the series “RIP Mare Nostrum”, travels along the Mediterranean coasts of Tunisia, Lebanon, Egypt, Greece and Spain to document the effects of climate change and mass fishing on coastal communities.
This award reaffirms the commitment of Casa Mediterráneo and the Xàbia Council to sustainability and the future of tourism in the Mediterranean basin.
