PROVINCIAL COUNCIL TO INVEST 600,000 EUROS TO RESOLVE CANSALADES JUNCTION
A roundabout will control traffic flow at this notorious accident black spot.
A new roundabout at the junction of Camí de les Cansalades (CV-747) and Carrer Benitatxell (CV-740) has moved closer to reality after the Diputación de Alicante confirmed that almost 588,000 euros will be invested into the project to resolve a notorious accident blackspot in the Marina Alta.
The provincial council provisionally confirmed the project in May 2022 when it announced that funding had been allocated for the drafting of the specifications of a new roundabout at the junction. Once final approval has been obtained, work will begin to expropriate the plots of land that will be required to build the new junction and the project will be put out to tender with the intention that it will be constructed next year, 2024.
The project will involve the widening of the road at the existing junction to create a roundabout that will have several exits, both for the main traffic routes between Xàbia and El Poble Nou de Benitatxell and for those small roads connecting to the nearest rural areas. Construction will take six months.
A solution to resolve the accident blackspot has been long-demanded, particularly by the local government in Benitatxell and a separate project was drafted in October 2008 which was never executed. And, as if to highlight the urgent need to control traffic at the junction, a 57 year old man was left seriously injured last Friday after an accident between a car and motorcycle at the same junction, the victim suffering a semi-amputation of his left leg and, after emergency treatment at the scene, he was flown by helicopter to hospital.
