The PARTIDO POPULAR XÀBIA presented its candidate list for the forthcoming local elections, a group which leader Rosa Cardona pledged would “strengthen ties and cut distances” between the three nuclei of the municipality – the town, the port, and the Arenal – by opening auxiliary council offices in the latter two locations.

The presentation was hosted by Isla Bonita and attended by party activists and sympathizers as well as those curious to discover what the party had planned for Xàbia should it attract enough votes to take control of the council.

In her speech, Cardona highlighted what she considered to be the primary “shortcomings” of the current local government body which she insisted placed the town in “an atmosphere of paralysis” with even the most basic everyday tasks such as fixing potholes ignored whilst the plans to reform CEIP Mediterània and replacing the prefabs at CEIP Graüll remain unfulfilled. She also picked up on the main topic of local political debate, the lack of social housing which means that young people are forced to leave the town in search of affordable accommodation.

She also expressed her party’s commitment to bring the local council closer to the associations, groups and residents of Xàbia, mentioning the need to reform the Central Cinema building in the heart of the historic centre as soon as possible to provide a cultural space for local associations, the reform and expansion of the El Surco building to support the musical talent in the town as well as the conversion of the Casa Candelaeia into a ‘Casa de les Arts’ to support the performing arts. Finally, she assured that a PP-controlled local government would review carefully the Auditorium project in order that its construction would be resumed.

In terms of infrastructure, Cardona said that her party was committed to changing the direction of traffic along the Primer Montañar to make it one-way towards the port as soon as the extension of Calle Génova is completed, providing a direct connection with the Arenal where the Parador de Jávea is located, seeking to resolve the issue of the decrease in commercial traffic that the port zone has suffered since the coastal road was made one-way in the direction of the Arenal.

Cardona said that one of the her biggest challenges and priorities will be “to work for a safe, friendly and welcoming Xàbia, where the little ones can play again and have fun in every space and playground, because they have been renovated, adapted and above all, finished”. She also said that she would be taking sustainability seriously “so that it is more than a slogan that disappears with a spill of water because a beach has to be closed again emblematic of Xàbia like that of Arenal”.

Finally, the mayoral candidate referred to her team which is working under the slogan “work and effort to achieve a Xàbia for all” but also has “the necessary humility, hope and concern to keep in touch with the reality of the street day by day and always ask ourselves, how to do more and how to better serve our residents, who are our true bosses”.
