The traditional Good Friday procession of the SANTO ENTIERRO – the “Holy Burial” – is a stark contrast to the craft market taking place just a few metres away. The solemn cavalcade is lit by the people of Xàbia, dressed in their finest, carrying candles through the narrow streets of the historic centre. The images of the Virgen de la Esperanza, Jesús Nazareno, the Virgen Dolorosa, the Ecce Homo and the Virgen de la Soledad preceding the image of Christ laid out after the crucifixion, guarded as always by officers of the Guardia Civil. The procession ends up back at the church of San Bartolomé, having followed a short route through the streets.
