The renovation of the children’s playground area in Parque Reina Sofia in Thiviers has been finally completed after more than three years of waiting and residents were able to explore and enjoy the new facilities after a formal opening ceremony.

The project, which was originally budgeted for 294,000 euros, began in mid-October 2021 but suffered a series of setbacks which saw work suspended after just four months. A change at the helm after the 2023 local elections handed over the issue to a new government body led by Rosa Cardona and, after a series of negotiations, the project was re-started and finally completed.

On Saturday 22nd February, just over three years and four months after the project was started, the play area was finally opened to the public in a formal ceremony initiated by the Children’s Council, the neighbourhood of Thiviers finally recovering fully one of its most beloved social spaces.

The Children’s Council has been central to the development of the new infrastructure since the project was conceived and designed by the young members of the initiative who listened to the needs of the young people of the town and actively participated in each phase of the project. During the inauguration, the current members of the children’s council launched a special message – “Let’s take care of our park” – through which it hopes to promote respect for the new infrastructure.

The new playground complex has a large play area, a sports court, gymnastic spaces and area which have been especially designed for fun and socialising by the little ones, such as board games. A pirate ship is the star of the play area which also includes a traditional swing, a slide, a climbing wall and various areas that invite imagination and adventure.
