Municipal Archive publishes two videos which show life in Xàbia in 1985
The videos are part of the vast audiovisual collection donated to the archive by the Molina family.
Back in late March of this year, the Municipal Archive in Xàbia received a vast audiovisual collection from the Molina brothers which showcases life in Xàbia from the 1960s to the present day. As part of its remit to preserve such material for future generations, the archive has been digitizing the collection and this week it has published two video on its YouTube channel that shows life in the town in 1985.
The first of these, entitled “Platja Arenal contrast hivern estiu de 1985”, highlights the Arenal beach during both summer and winter in 1985, contrasting a beach full of bathers and tourists in August with a completely empty beach in the winter. In the video, you can see the premises of the first line of the beach and the development of the apartment blocks behind them.
The second video, entitled “Estampa familiar fent bogamarins com qualsevol familia xabiera l’any 1985”, show a typical scene in Xàbia at the time, images of the Molina family catching sea urchins in the Cala Blanca area. Lasting about three minutes, the video show how they picked the sea urchins with their hands and the women who opened them for eating in situ. Such actions are now impossible due to the control of the fishing for sea urchins which is only allowed during the winter months and under the supervision of the Fisherman’s Guild.
