CD Jávea picked up the first point of the season to lift themselves off the bottom of the table after José Cabo cancelled out Santa Pola’s first half goal with just five minutes remaining in a tough game on a hot early evening at the Campo d’Esports.

Both sides started strong, aiming to control the midfield before mounting any attacks on goal, and it was the home side which had the first real opportunity when Mario broke free down the right but his cross into the centre was easily collected by the keeper.

The visitors had their first chance a few minutes later when a shot from Yeray was pushed wide by Tonet before they took the lead on 29 minutes through Llamas who connected perfectly with a low cross from the left from Iñaki. Santa Pola then dominated the rest of the first half, with the home side unable to break down a resolute defensive line, despite battling well in the midfield.

The second half began with more positive play from Jávea and a shot from Raúl Caudeli hit the crossbar just a minute in. Santa Pola responded with a half chance from former Jávea striker Guerrero and once again the visitor’s defensive wall stood firm against determined attacks from the home side.

But walls can be demolished in a split second and, with just five minutes remaining, a long kick from Tonet was collected by José Cabo who fired a low shot past the advancing keeper to level the scores with his third goal of the season, securing Jávea’s first point which lifts them off the bottom of the table on goals scored, courtesy of CD Thader’s inability to hit the back of the net in their opening four games.

Particular mention should be made of the performance of Mario Feliu on the right as well as Isac Gomis in defence whilst striker José Cabo showed glimpses of the form that helped him grab seven goals last season.

Next Sunday, CD Jávea are at home again, hosting CF Independiente Alicante who are just one place above the ‘rojiblancos’ in the table.
