CD Jávea head into the winter break on the back of one of the worst opening halves of the season for some years, the ‘rojiblancos’ having recorded just three victories in 16 games and finding their grip on Preferente football being gently prised open on a weekly basis. A fourth straight defeat and another three goals conceded.

Played on an early evening on a Saturday, the game attracted few punters to the municipal football stadium, a combination of festive lunches and the poor performance of the team resulting in less than 100 people turning out. Those who did saw the home side struggle to contain a strong team from Tavernes, one sitting nicely in the top five, and it was the visiting team that looked most likely to score, almost opening their account in the opening minutes but a powerful header crashed against the bar with goalkeeper beaten. A period of recovery by Jávea saw Cabo shoot just wide and some great work down the flanks from the experienced Javea should have been better rewarded but his cross found no home player in the area. But the hope was short-lived. On 25 minutes, the visitors took the lead, taking advantage of an error from the keeper which allowed Talens to tap a low cross into the back of an empty net.

The defensive failures continued. Some hesitancy from Maria saw Talens snatch the ball away from under his feet and cross to Sabater who fired past the keeper and just inside the right post to make it 0-2 on 36 minutes, sparking a hectic final few minutes of the half which saw the visitors reduced to ten men on 44 minutes after Luis Garcia was brought down violently from behind by Moral who was shown a straight red. Jávea tried to take advantage and might have reduced the arrears just before the break through Jaci and Cabo.

The home side should have continued to seek more from the numerical advantage but it last just five minutes as Jávea’s Javi was also shown a straight red, equalizing opposing forces. For the rest of the half, the hosts rarely threatened the opposition goal as the Tavernes defensive line held firm. At the other end, the keeper was made to earn his money but couldn’t prevent a third goal on 90 minutes, scored by Sabater. The referee added six minutes but Jávea couldn’t find even a single consolation before the final whistle brought the nightmare to an end.
