CD Jávea enter the New Year at the bottom of the table and out of the regional cup competition La Nostra Copa after losing 2-0 at Vinarós CF just before Christmas. It’s not the best position to be in. The side hasn’t won since mid-November and was thumped 0-7 in its last league away trip so head coach Julio Ivorra has a massive task to recover the season to try and maintain a position in the elite regional league.

Three points adrift of safety, it’s not quite game over just yet. Miracles can happen in football and it happened very recently when Ivorra took over a team destined for relegation and turned it into one of the form teams of the second half of the season to claim a place in the inaugural Lliga Comunitat. Lightning could strike twice. But it needs to do so before the matches start running out.

The opponents sit in mid-table with 18 points from 13 games. Their last six games have produced two wins, two draws and two defeats. Both those wins have come in the last two homes games: 2-0 v Crevillente Deportivo and 3-0 v CD Dénia. Last weekend, they crashed oit of La Nostra Copa after a 2-1 away defeat at Santa Pola CF.

THE OPPOSITION

CF UE Tavernes de la Valldigna emerged in the 1950s, a club that has seen a number of name changes from UD Tabernes to the current extended nomenclature, although it is known simply as UE Tavernes.

Aside from a spell in the Third Division in early 1960s, the club has played its football in the regional league system and has spent the past 34 seasons (bar one) playing at the top level of football in the Comunidad Valenciana.

Promotion back to the national pyramid has come close in recent years, the last time being at the end of the 2020/21 season when it finished runners-up to CF Independiente Alicante in the Group 5 of the Regional Preferente but lost 2-1 over two legs in the play-off semi-finals to Rayo Llíria CF.

Played for Both Teams

Francisco Javier Corbalán; Álvaro Bernáldez Raja; Adrián Salom Martínez; Alfonso Miñana Martí; Carlos Miñana Martí; Carlos Quintana Herrero; Vicente Sellens Cardona.
