CF UD Calpe v CD Jávea

Campo Municipal de Calpe

Referee: María Romero Navarro

The end is night. CD Jávea make the short journey down the coast to Calp for the final game of what has been a frustrating season which promised much in the first half of the campaign but ultimately delivered a disappointing campaign. Ultimately, it has achieved its primary objective – to remain at this level – but there have been moments when it could have been so much more, especially when the club claimed top spot in the Preferente for the first time in 19 years.

It is true that the club is in a transition phase, recovering from the resignation of the entire board of directors last summer, and now making more noises about becoming a local club for local players, nurturing home-grown talent rather than bringing in players from across the region, a policy that it is being followed by more and more football clubs in recent years. It will remain to be seen what plans are being made to rebuild the team over the summer, a squad that can make a genuine bid for a top three spot.

After CF UD Calpe’s stunning win at promotion hopefuls Ontinyent 1931 CF last weekend secured their safety from relegation, neither side has anything to play for apart from pride. And head coach Lauro Techeira admits that his emotions will be split against a club where he was coach last season – Calpe avoided relegation on the final day of that campaign, thanks to a win against Jávea – and where he now lives. “There will be a lot of emotion but luckily both teams are safe and we should be able to enjoy the game,” he said.

Taking stock of this season, he told Xàbia AL DÍA that it has been a very “atypical” one for him, beginning the 2021/22 campaign at Gandía CF – the group champions – and finishing it at CD Jávea where he arrived with the objective of keeping the club in the Preferente after a ruinous run of games in which the club suffered a free-fall down the league table. The objective has been achieved but he is unsure of his future. “Let’s finish the season and then we can sit down together and talk about our objectives – both mine and the club.”

CD Jávea will travel to Calp without the injured Ferrán and Juli, solid defender Paolo, who will be missing his first game of the season through suspension, and leading scorer Héctor, who will be missing due to work priorities. This, head coach Techeira will have 14 senor players available plus youngsters Álvaro and Umar.
