The battling 1-1 draw at Tavernes, never a great place to get a result, was tempered by wins for CD Thader and L’Olleria CF, who pulled off a stunning 4-1 victory at Santa Pola, which means that CD Jávea now sit two points adrift at the bottom of the table as we approach the mid-point of the season. We’ve been here before, it’s not over yet, especially as the two sides immediately above us on Sunday afternoon.
Head coach Julio Ivorra has looked to strengthen his squad with a series of trials over the festive period and Ismail Tamer -“ISMA” – has arrived from FFCV Primera Group 4 side UD Ilicitano. The young midfielder played four times for the Elx side this season and was a non-playing substitute at Tavernes last week. In addition, a young centre-back “OBI” has also been signed. Ivorra describes them both as “young guys [who will] give more competition to the squad”. A bonus is that club skipper Aldo is available again after serving a two-match suspension.
Reserve keeper Aaron has left the club due to personal circumstances and the vacant position will be covered by 18-year-old youth keeper Miller Hales, who was also a non-playing sub in Tavernes. Ivorra said that “Miller was with us during the preseason. He has very good qualities and is mentally strong and has a future ahead of him so he can take advantage of a great goalkeeper like Tonet and be prepared when his opportunity arrives”.
Crevillente Deportivo arrive in Xàbia in third place, taking advantage of Calpe’s defeat at league leaders Benidorm to leapfrog over them after a 1-1 draw against early pace-setters Eldense “B”. Ivorra admitted that they will be tough opponents – “[they are] a team that has been put together to win promotion” – but assures fans that his players are very motivated and have been training well during the week.
And, with the entire second half of the season remaining to fight their way out of the bottom three, he admitted that he reminds his players that ‘you don’t have to think about it, you have to do it’ and that there is a huge margin for improvement. “We have not been at the level that the competition required, and many times it has been more due to our discredit than the rival’s merit. We know it, we are self-critical and we do not look for excuses”.
He added that “the important thing is that I see the team convinced and committed to give everything and fight until the end. Nobody throws in the towel here, and I hope to see that stand like last year, with people cheering, encouraging, wearing our colours… we have to get it together”.
THE OPPOSITION
Crevillente Deportivo was formed in 1955 to fill the void after the collapse of Unión Iberia CF and Crevillente CF. It has been one of the powerhouses in regional football in the Comunidad Valenciana, playing a lot of its football at the national Third Division level; the side also went close to winning a spot in the First Division – “La Liga” – but lost out in a play-off to CD Castellón and played a couple of times in the Copa del Rey.
More recently, it has spent all but three seasons playing at Third Division level. At the end of the 2018/19 season, the club finished fifth and missed out on a promotion play-off spot by just one point.
At the end of the 2020-21 season, Crevillente Deportivo finished 7th in a reduced 10-team Third Division Group 6B and suffered relegation back to the regional set-up for the first since 2014. The following season, the club convincingly won Group 5 of the Regional Preferente, six points ahead of second-placed UD Rayo Ibense but lost out on promotion in the play-off final to UD Patacona, the 0-0 draw followed penalties in which the Group 2 side triumphed 5-3.
A third place finish in Group 4 last season secured a second successive play-off spot but they lost out in the semi-finals to CD Utiel from Group 2 who would go on to win promotion to the Third Division.
Played for Both Teams
Francisco Javier Corbalán, Manuel Esteban Roch; Jaime López Lloret “Puncho”.
