MATCH PREVIEW 1

CD JÁVEA v MUTXAMEL CF
Sunday 2nd February, 12.00pm
Campo d’Esports Municipal Xàbia

OUR OPPONENTS

Mutxamel CF was formed in 1969, representing the town which lies some nine kilometres north of the city of Alicante. For the first few seasons, the club was federated to the Murcian Football Federation before transferring to the Valencian Football Federation in 1976.

At the end of the 1977/78 season, Mutxamel CF finished top of the Primera Regional (Sur) and were rewarded with promotion to the Regional Preferente. Within three years, the club had returned to the Primera Regional (Sur) but promotion was achieved once again at the end of the 1982/83 season when it finished as champions and this time, the club remains at the top tier of regional football in the Comunidad Valenciana for eight seasons before suffering relegation at the end of the 1989-90 season, finishing bottom of a league table that was topped by CD Jávea.

However, two successive promotions as champions of the Primera Regional (Group 5) and Regional Preferente (Sur) saw Mutxamel join CD Jávea in the Tercera División (Group 6) for the 1992/93 season, then the fourth step in the Spanish national league system, and the following season, the club finished in their highest ever position of 10th.

Two successive relegations between 1996 and 1998 saw Mutxamel CF return to the Primera Regional, then the second tier of regional football in the Valencian region, for the first time since 1990/91. Another championship season followed (1999/00) for a return to the Preferente (Group 4) where the club competed for five seasons before relegation back to the Primera Regional at the end of the 2004/05 campaign.

The 2008/09 championship secured a return to the Preferente (Group 4) and the following season, Mutxamel CF finished third to secure a play-off spot for promotion to the Tercera División. However, a semi-final defeat over two-legs to CD Buñol ended any hopes for a return to the national league system for the first time since 1997. The club couldn’t build on the success and the following season it finiehed bottom to drop back into the Primera Regional (Group 7).

Another championship title at the end of the 2012/13 season was rewarded with promotion back to the Preferente (Group 4) but it was a brief return to the regional top tier, the club finished second-from-bottom to suffered immediate relegation back to the Primera Regional.

Mutxamel CF have remained at the second tier of regional football ever since, “winning” a spot in the Primera FFCV after restructuring in the summer of 2023 by finished third in the Primera Regional (Group 7).

This season, the club tops the league table at the end of the first half of the campaign with 31 points from 15 games, their only two defeats coming on the opening day of the season at home to CD Jávea (0-1) and away to Catral-Castrum CF (1-2) just before the Christmas break. The club boasts the best defence in the league with just 12 goals conceded. Striker Hugo Romero is top scorer with 9 goals from 14 games.

Mutxamel CF have also won the Copa San Pedro, the oldest amateur cup competition in Spain, three times in 1994, 1999 and 2024.

HEAD 2 HEAD

CD Jávea and Mutxamel CF have met 37 times since their first meeting during the 1976/77 season when Mutxamel transferred across to the Valencian Football Federation. The club’s first met in mid-January 1977 in Jávea with the visitors running out 1-0 winners. They completed their first and only “double” over CD Jávea by winning the return fixture 6-1 in mid-June 1977, the rojiblancos heaviest defeat of the campaign. CD Jávea finished 15th spot whilst Mutxamel CF claimed 6th spot.

CD Jávea’s first win came on the fifth attempt, a 3-1 win at home in mid-November 1981; Mutxamel won the return fixture by a single goal at the end of March 1982. Both sides chased for the top spot for much of the season and both finished on 48 points; CD Jávea were handed the runners-up spot on account of boasting a better head-to-head record. Only the champions, Bañeres CD, would be promoted.

CD Jávea’s first of three “doubles” over Mutxamel CF was during the 1989/90 season when the club finished top of the pile to win promotion to the Tercera División for the first time since the late 1960s (and the last time the club did so). The rojiblancos won the away game by a single goal in early October 1989 and then scored two more without a reply in mid-February 1990 in the 15th game of a 21-game unbeaten run that CD Jávea chalked up between the end of October and the beginning of April.

CD Jávea’s biggest victory margin over Mutxamel CF is 4-0 which it has achieved twice (1988/89 and 2004/05) and the biggest defeat remains the 1-6 reverse at the end of the 1976/77 season.

Finally, Mutxamal CF has won just once in Jávea, the 1-0 victory back in January 1977.

Earlier this season, CD Jávea kicked off its campaign with a 1-0 win in Mutxamel, one of only two defeats the opposition has suffered during this campaign in which they have been amongst the front-runners for much of the season.
