The Opposition

CF Independiente Alicante was formed in 2014 in the wake of the collapse of Alicante CF, which was dissolved after 96 years as a result of years of severe economic issues. The club started at the bottom in the Segunda Regional and slowly rose through the pyramid to the Regional Preferente, despite suffering its own economic problems, and is now considered the reserve side of CF Intercity Alicante, which plays in the Primera Federación, the third tier of the Spanish football league system. After finishing in 6th spot in the final season of the Regional Preferente, CF Independiente Alicante qualified to play in the inaugural season of the Lliga Comunitat Valenciana.

Much like CD Jávea, CF Independiente Alicante has not has the best of starts in the new elite regional league with a draw and two defeats from the first three games which means that the club sits in 14th spot, one position above the rojiblancos on account of a better goal difference.

Their top scorer is 23-year-old midfielder Juan Manual Ruano with three goals from four games, including one penalty.

This Week’s News

CD Jávea was rocked during the week by the news that striker Rubén Ortolá has decided to leave the club due to a lack of playing time this season. The 30-year-old came up through the ranks from the club’s youth academy to the senior squad and, aside from a season at UD CF Calpe, has spent his entire playing career with his local side, making 168 appearances for the senior side since his debut in September 2012.

However, having made just one substitute appearance in the first four games of this season, Ortolá feels that it’s clear that he doesn’t feature in head coach Julio Ivorra’s plans, despite being in good physical condition and having scored twice in pre-season, and claims that his confidence is at “rock bottom”.

That said, he admits that he is open to offers from the club and remains linked as a coach and football coordinator, for which CD Jávea has expressed their thanks whilst respecting his decision to quit as a senior player for his home town club.
