CD EL CAMPELLO vs CD JÁVEA

Camp d’Esports Municipal, Xàbia

OUR OPPONENTS

The town of El Campello lies some 12km north of Alicante and boasts a vibrant marina, a historic watchtower, and a lively promenade lined with restaurants and cafes serving fresh seafood and local delicacies.

Football in El Campello emerged in the 1920s with the formation of Campello FC which played non-federated friendly games against clubs from Alicante and Villajoyosa. In the mid-1930s, two more clubs were formed called Estrella FC and Júpiter FC which provided intense local rivalry as each team attracted its own fan base. Only Campello FC survived the Spanish civil war and by the 1950s, it was playing in provincial competitions and in the 60s, it was joined by Atlético Campello.

Club Deportivo El Campello was formed in 1968 but it wouldn’t be until the mid-1970s that the club started playing federated football with the Murcian Football Federation. In its first season, 1975/76, the club won Group 3 of the Segunda Regional and was promoted to the Primera Regional of the Valencian Football Federation. Success continued as it won the Southern Group to win promotion to the Regional Preferente, the top tier of regional football. However, due to restructuring, the 10th spot finish wasn’t enough to avoid immediate relegation back to the Primera Regional where it remained for the next 14 seasons.

The runners-up spot at the end of the 1992/93 season was enough to win promotion back to the Regional Preferente and the following season, the club moved to its new ground, El Vincle, although the celebrations must have been somewhat muted by the 0-6 defeat to Hércules CF in the inauguration friendly match.

In 1996, the club stood down from competitive football but returned for 1997/98 season in the Segunda Regional and worked its way back up to the Regional Preferente by the beginning of the new century. For the next few seasons, the club drifted between the Regional Preferente and the Primera Regional before consolidating itself in the former for eight seasons until relegation at the end of the 2014/15.

At the end of the 2022/23 season, CD El Campello won Group 7 of the Primera Regional by nine points but would remain at the second tier of the regional football after restructuring meant that, although it was an effective promotion to a different group, it would remain at the same level as founder members of Group 4 of the Primera FFCV. In the inauguration season, it finished 7th with 44 points from 30 games.

This season, CD El Campello have been setting the pace in Group 4 alongside closer neighbours Mutxamel CF, currently sitting in 2nd spot with 21 points from 10 games.

HEAD 2 HEAD

CD Jávea and CD El Campello first met in early January 1977 in El Campello with the hosts running out 2-0 winners. They completed the “double” over the rojiblancos in May 1977 as they secured the championship and won promotion to the Regional Preferente.

Two seasons later, CD El Campello returned to the Primera Regional and the two teams carved out a 1-1 draw in late November 1978 before CD Jávea recorded their first win in the second half of April 1979, a narrow 2-1 home victory. At the end of the season, the rojiblancos finished in 6th spot, one point and one place below CD El Campello.

During the early 80s, the clubs met 12 times with CD Jávea claiming seven wins, including a 6-0 home win in October 1982, followed up by a 4-2 victory in El Campello, the first of only two “doubles” that the rojiblancos have enjoyed in 16 campaigns.

CD El Campello’s biggest victory against CD Jávea was in February 1981, a 2-5 reverse that ended the rojiblancos six game winning streak that included a 6-0 win against Alicante CF reserves and a 5-2 away victory at CD La Nucia. The clubs would finish that 1980/81 season on level points.

CD Jávea have won just one of the last six encounters with CD El Campello claiming three victories.
