The 25th edition of the AJEDREZ VIVIENTE – the Living Chess – returns to Duanes de la Mar this Saturday 29th July at 10.30pm, a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest that has become an iconic event which has travelled throughout Spain and abroad.

The 2023 edition will be considering the environmental issues, a primary concern in these days, with the sea of Xàbia, pollution and recycling taking the leading role.

The idea was developed by Álvaro Monfort, a member of the Commission de Festes Mare de Déu de Loreto which organises the event, but the arrival of the pandemic cut short its development and it was decided to postpone it to form part of the 25th anniversary edition.

Entitled “A(MAR)”, the work will take the audience into the depths of the bay of Xàbia when an ancient civilization worships the world above them and believes that everything that comes down to them is a gift with which they create the home. However, not everything is as beautiful as it seems.

The story will be played out over a game of chess, played by professionals through a digital platform, on a giant chessboard that will be laid out on Avenida Lepanto. The play will begin at 10.30pm and will feature over 100 participants, including the young actors aged between 7 and 16, dancers from En Danza and the Symphony Orchestra of the Centre Artistic Musical de Xàbia, directed by Joan Bou.

The guest of honour will be Francisco Torner, director of management control at the Oceanogràfic de la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias de Valencia and a marine biologist who has promoted many projects to educate people about our coastline.
