javeamigos REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2023 | PART 4
Our look back at 2023, a year in which there was a change of the helm at the top and tourism returned to pre-pandemic levels.
Welcome to the final part of a four-part look back at 2023 in Xàbia, a review of the last three months of the year in which next year’s Fogueres Queens were elected, a fifth separator bin for residents was announced, local police launched a new awareness campaign aimed at owners of electric scooters, local residents had to queue up to claim a shopping voucher, a new junction was proposed on the AP-7 near Gata, an ice rink appeared in the Arenal and – FINALLY – the pedals to open the big bins were to return.

The final quarter of the year kicked off with one of the emotional nights of the year for the xabieros – the election of the Fogueres Queens for the following year. Angela Tachó Llidó was selected by her peers as the Fogueres Queen 2024 whilst Claudia Barragán Rodríguez will be her junior counterpart. We all discovered that the local council was to introduce a fifth bin to enhance our enjoyment of separating waste whilst also finding out that many green zones were being fenced off to deter illegal dumping. The local council revealed that almost 1,400 cars were denied access to the popular coves of Barraca-Portitxol and Granadella during the months of July and August. Condenados al Bordillo and Toni Marí collected their municipal recognition at the annual October 9 Vila de Xàbia awards. The local police launched a new awareness campaign aimed at owners of electric scooters (almost three months later and it hasn’t made much difference). The local council announced that it had allocated more than 211,000 euros to get the Camí Castellans sewage network project completed; in late December it announced that a contractor had been found to do the work. The town hall declared that it was developing a policy to be able to reuse wastewater safely. A new shopping voucher scheme was launched – and immediately ran into administrative problems when residents were required to QUEUE UP to apply; the town hall later admitted that it wasn’t the best method to distribute them.

The Cruz Roja de Xàbia announced that it had provided over 1,900 medical assistances during a busy summer season. The local council began an awareness campaign for the new organic bins which will be just for organic waste – like the grey ones? The shopping voucher scheme sells out in just four days as people queued for several hours at various points around the town; a councillor admitted that the method of acquiring one would be studied for any future campaigns. The town’s orchestra travelled to Valencia and finished runners-up in a prestigious contest. The local council announced that it was to build a new “pump track” zone – which is apparently a track for bikes with lots of bumps. A photo opportunity to declare that the opening of the new municipal swimming pool was getting closer attracted a few comments about just who was responsible for it. Almost a year after we announced the option as a joke for last year’s “inocente” news article, the Spanish government revealed that it was inviting proposals for the construction of a new junction on the AP-7 between the Ondara and Benissa junctions. The town hall announced that some 315,000 euros had been allocated to support local small businesses and the self-employed – if they qualified. The new spa-hotel just outside the port edged closer to reality after it was reported that the licencing process was almost complete. The local council announced that 400,000 euros had been put aside to develop a permanent health centre in the Arenal. Residents were up in arms as camper vans descended on the coast and set up camp, despite bylaws prohibiting them. The sculpture of tennis player David Ferrer was returned to the promenade bearing his name after renovation work due to vandalism. Funding was approved for a municipal CCTV surveillance network whilst the regional government considered a proposal to build a multi-story car-park in the port zone.

The final month of year opened with CD Jávea’s heaviest defeat for over four decades at the hands of Benidorm. The town hall announced that 2024 would be the year of Antoni Llidó, a Roman Catholic priest born in Xàbia in 1936 who travelled to Chile to do missionary work and disappeared after the Pinochet-led coup. The local council confirmed that it was to finally deal with the problem of illegal parking of camper vans along the coast and by the end of the month, height restrictions and barriers were installed to prevent it. Slideboy Vegas won the first Arenal Blues Battle of the Bands whilst Christmas music started to be heard across the town as the festive season approached. The annual Elf Run, organised by The Lancashire Bruja bar, raised almost 1,470 euros for the Raquel Paya Special Needs School in Dénia, a new record. The local council opened up the tender process to provide the tourist train service. An ice rink appeared in the Arenal as the zone enjoyed its first ever Christmas fair. Residents in urbanisations must have thought Christmas had come early when the local council announced that improvement work to street lighting would begin in early 2024 whilst those in Thiviers must have been thrilled to learn that work on the paralysed renovation work on the park would soon restart. Three fifth prize winning numbers in El Gordo were bought in the lottery shop in the port. And – FINALLY – trials were being carried out on the new rubbish bins to make them easier to open without touching them … much like to old ones.
