INTERNATIONAL TOURISM TO SPAIN REACHED 5 MILLION IN FEBRUARY 2024

In the first two months of 2024, the number of tourists who visited Spain increased by 15.6% and was close to 9.8 million.

Provisional data provided by INE, the National Statistics Institute, has shown that five million international tourists visited Spain during February 2024, an increase of 15.9% on the same month in 2023.

The data provided by the INE’s FRONTUR study, which analyses tourist movement at the country’s borders, also confirmed that the number of tourists who visited Spain in the first two months of 2024 increased by 15.6%.

The main origin of international tourism during February was the United Kingdom with 939,712 visitors, a 20% rise of the same month in 2023. Over the first two months of the year, almost 1.8 million Brits visited Spain, up over 16% on the same period last year.

The French accounted for 919,218 visits during February, whilst 592,188 Germans travelled south. Just over 300,000 Italians made their way across the western Mediterranean to Spain whilst almost 250,000 Dutch visited the country during the same month. Citizens from Nordic countries made up almost 375,000 visits whilst Americans accounted for just over 164,000 trips.

With regards to accommodation, just over 62% of international tourists checked into hotels during February, up 14.8% of the same period in 2023, whilst 14% chose rental accommodation, up almost 44% on last year. Almost 13% stayed with family or friends whilst just 5% stayed in their own property. The average length of stay for international tourists during February was between 4 and 7 nights whilst almost 3.9 million travelled to Spain without a package deal.

Almost 85% of international tourists arrived by plane. The main destination for international tourists during February was the Canary Islands (1.4 million) with Catalonia second most popular (1 million), followed by Andalucía with 726,000 visitors. The Comunidad Valenciana attracted just over 583,000 visitors from abroad, up over 21% on the same month in 2023.

With regards to spending, the international tourist spent, on average, 1,347 euros per person during their visit in February, an increase of 8.5% on the same period in 2023. During the first two months of the year, total spending by international tourists increased by 25.7% to over 13 billion euros.
