Grup de Danses Portitxol de Xàbia opens registration for 2023-2024 courses
The group are leaders in teaching the traditions of Xàbia including the dances and the musical instruments.
The main objective of the Grup de Danses Portitxol has always been to preserve the traditional music and dances of Xàbia and La Marina Alta, to enhance and promote the customs and traditions of our ancestors as well as recover that old dances and songs of the region as well as across the Valencian lands.
The group is one of the oldest in Xàbia, having been established for more than 50 years, and has released two albums of traditional songs in recent years in collaboration with the Generalitat Valenciana. The first, entitled “CANÇONS DE LA MARINA”, was a compilation of traditional music from the Marina Alta, whilst the second release, entitled “EL DOLÇAINER DEL PORTITXOL”, told the story of the mythical origin of the Sant Joan festivities, set during the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918.
The 2023-2024 academic year of the Portitxol School begins this October and registration has now opened for youngsters who want to learn more about the traditions of the region. The minimum age for learning the “tabalet” (traditional drum) and traditional dances is those who were born in 2017. The minimum age for the other instruments will be 2023. Both years are inclusive. Classes will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays for dolçaina and string instruments, on Wednesdays for traditional dance and Thursdays for the tabalet.
Pre-registration can be made online via this link.
