One of Xàbia’s most iconic annual sporting event will be played out this weekend – the Granadella Trail Costa Blanca, one of the premier mountain races in the region which takes place on both Saturday and Sunday with something for all the family to enjoy.

Organised by the Club d’Atletisme Llebeig, particularly the club’s mountain section headed by Rolf Jong, the weekend’s sporting fun will begin on Saturday with a ‘minitrail’ for the youngest, in which one hundred young athletes will participate. And then, at 3.00pm in Parque Pinosol, there will be space for technical training and the race numbers for the following day can be collected.

The main event arrives on Sunday, starting at 9.00am, with two distances on offer (14 and 21 kilometres) which cover a route of taking in the most iconic points of the Parque Forestal de la Granadella, such as the castle ruins and the clifftop path with stunning views over the Mediterranean.

The race can be followed online through a live stream on the Facebook page Granadella Trail provided by camera runners and drones in the air.

The 2022 edition will feature 600 participants, a maximum set due to the continued health protocols in the face of the pandemic, thus it was no surprise that registrations were sold out within 24 hours of the registration period opening, demonstrating clearly the popularity of this event, which has become a benchmark in environmental respect policies. Participants will be coming from across the country with many names linked to mountain elite sport, both in the female and male categories.

Councillor Alberto Tur (Sports) described the Granadella Trail as “legendary”, an event which attracts a lot of athletes and reflects all the values that the local council itself is committed to, such as respect for the environment and social responsibility.

He thanked everyone who will make it possible for the race to run safely, from the local police to the volunteers from the Cruz Roja and Protección Civil as well as collaborating clubs and individuals.

For many years, you’ve told us how much you love what we’re doing and some of you have even asked for ways to say thanks. For us, there really is nothing easier to show someone how much you appreciate their efforts than buying them a beer (or a wine; or even a coffee) – it’s so simple.
