The reduction in social security affiliations has been the highest since September 2019.

Job creation in the Marina Alta region lost momentum in September, according to a report published by the Marina Alta Observatory which is based on data provided by Seguridad Social and LABORA.

The number of Social Security affiliations fell by 2,660 people compared to August, a drop of some 4.08% which is greater than usual for September in recent years and the largest drop since September 2019. In addition, the region lost 3,368 contributors to social security between July and September, highlighting a small slowdown in the labour market that is being experienced at the moment.

A drop in employment is expected after the busy months of the summer season when the bars, restaurants and hotels sector reduces its workforce as the tourists head home. However, the drop this September has been greater than the same month in 2023 when just over 1,140 jobs were lost and even greater than 2022 when 2,248 positions were lost. In fact, 2024 is closer to the average number of jobs lost in September between 2014 and 2019 (2,680), a period of job recovery after the financial crisis.

Despite the disappointing figures with regards to employment in the Marina Alta, the month of September still saw the second best figure for the total number of contributions to the social security system – 62,465 people – whilst the number of jobseekers fell by 126 compared to August, the lowest figure for September for 16 years.
