News
Ximp Puig, president of the Generalitat Valenciana, has expressed concerns about the increasing habit of the ‘tardeo’ in the region, heading out for drinks in the late afternoon rather than in the evening in a bid to get around the curfew bringing social life to an early close.
Spain
The national 14-day IA rate is 246.19, a slight decrease on the previous update but still 27% higher than it was 14 days ago and the figures don’t take into account the festive weekend, with Fernando Simón, the director of the Health Ministry’s Coordination Centre for Health Alerts (CCAES), warning that the public holidays don’t allow for the evaluation of data. “We could be seeing a stabilization of the trend, but we must be prudent with the interpretation. The figures for hospitalizations and ICUs are better, but we cannot drop our guard.”

News
Five cases of the new, more infectious strain of COVID-19 have been detected in Andalucia, whilst four more patients are being monitored. Four cases have been confirmed in Madrid, with three further suspected cases being analysed. In all cases, the carriers had recently returned to Spain from the United Kingdom, although two travellers arriving in Madrid presented proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival.
Data Explanation
1 The IA rate is the number of new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 inhabitants over the past 14 days. It is considered the most accurate measure of the spread of the virus. The aim of the Spanish government is to lower this rate to 25.
2 The positivity rate refers to the percentage of all COVID-19 tests carried out which have come back positive. A high figure means that it doesn’t take many tests to come across a positive result.
