Mayoress Rosa Cardona, the councillor responsible for the Historic Centre, Juanlu Cardona (PP), and the councillor responsible for Urban Planning, Pere Sapena (PP), met with residents and business people in the historic centre of Xàbia for the first meeting of the neighborhood councillors as part of the government team’s citizen participation project.

Councillor Juanlu Cardona acted as master of ceremonies and, after explaining some of the decisions that the local government has made, he gave the floor to the mayoress, Rosa Cardona, who pointed out that in these six months the cleaning of the streets of the town has improved and that citizen security was being reinforced with a greater police presence. Among other measures, she said that the area around the auditorium work has been cleaned “so that residents have more parking spaces” since this space had been occupied by the work, long abandoned.

Then the councillor responsible for Urban Planning, Pere Sapena, explained that “everything is almost ready” to begin the tender process for the completion of the Parque Reina Sofia Thiviers project, whilst he also announced that the priority of the local government is the renovation of Casa Candelaria to convert it into an arts centre, and resume the Central Cinema project, works that “will allow the Historic Centre to come to life.” Along with this, Sapena reported that he is working on improving road traffic on Calle Roques.

In addition, the neighborhood councillor announced that the local council is drafting a comprehensive project for the Parque Montaner, which includes, among other things, its closure at night and the improvement of lighting as well as the renovation of the Riurau d’Arnauda that will allow it to be enabled for various activities such as a farmer’s market.

In return, residents demanded greater security and police presence, greater control of the scooters and bicycles that travel in the pedestrian areas as well as special monitoring for the penya ‘casals’. In addition, they asked the government team to draft an emergency plan for the Historic Centre.

After this meeting with the residents of the Historic Centre, the councillor responsible for Citizen Participation, Enrique Escrivá (PP), stressed the commitment of the government team to contact with the residents of the three urban centres and the urbanizations. “This direct contact allows us to be close to reality and listen to the demands of residents, requests that we collect and attend to since that is what moves us in our day-to-day life as head of the councils.”
