However, the decision has not been taken due to the danger of imminent collapse of the historic building.

The local council has ordered the definite closure of the section of Carrer de L’Escola which passes in front of Casa Candelaria, a historic building which has been propped up by large metal supports for the past few years to prevent collapse.

However, the closure has not been ordered because the building is in danger of imminent collapse but in response to a number of reports of several incidents between pedestrians and users of bicycles and electric scooters.

Last week, three residents were almost knocked over by riders along this narrow stretch of road. They filed a formal complaint to the Policía Local which has led to the Department for Citizen Safety to agree to a complete closure of the road.

The short stretch of road, just 20 metres, has been fenced off and marked accordingly to prevent access by pedestrians, bicycles, electric scooters and motorbikes who will have to take a longer route via Ronda Norte or Portal del Clot to access the heart of the historic centre.

The Casa Candelaria, also known as ‘Casa dels Xolbi’, is one of the oldest houses in the historic centre of Xàbia that is thought to have been built in the latter half of the 15th century. There are plans to completely restore the building as a public space.
