COUNCIL CHANGES TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS IN PLAZA CELESTINO PONS
Demand from local businesses and residents force Council to modify restrictions around the ‘indoor market’.
In response to the demands of local businesses, the Council has changed the hours in which the Plaza Celestino Pons in the heart of the historic centre is open to traffic. From today Thursday 17th, drivers can enter this public space that surrounds the Municipal Market between 8.00am and 2.00pm, after which a bollard will rise to turn the square back into a pedestrianized zone for the rest of the day.
The Council maintains their intention in favouring the pedestrian use of this central square and is working on the installation of a control system that is more compatible in combining the closure of the space with the access of the residents.
However, the rehabilitation of the church of San Bartolomé and the space needed to occupy for machinery and construction material make it difficult to propose any pedestrianization project at this time and for this reason, the square will temporarily reopen to traffic all day tomorrow Friday 18th until the evening when access will be closed to facilitate the installation of the market bar terraces in Calle Sor Maria Gallart.
